We had friends over this weekend with their three small children and after dinner had a bit of a jam session with everyone. It was sweet and funny and just so great to see the kids diving into the music box to choose random instruments like egg shakers, triangle, resonator bars or the cabasa while parents played guitar, bass and even a little ukulele (of course). The flavour of that evening felt a lot like what I hear when I listen to the new Alastair Moock album, These Are My Friends, which is out Oct 4th. Alastair is a folk musician from Boston who has made a few really wonderful kids albums on the side, which is often how I like it, mostly because they don’t just make “kid music”, they make great music that appeals to kids and their parents.
I think one of the things I like best about Alastair is the sound of his voice. Don’t get me wrong, the tunes are wonderful, too, but I think the rough, rootsy quality of his sound just gives these silly songs that bit of edge that I tend to gravitate to.
Check out the title track, These are my friends. It’s toe-tappin’ goodness that has pure silliness smeared all over it.
Who can't use a little folk-inspired silly in their life now and then?

Sounds really cute!!! I always enjoyed the kids' music, especially when it's silly.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun family activity and great way to pass on a musical interest and talent to them.
