I have always believed in trying to make “green” choices where possible and use products that are as natural as possible, lessening the chance that harsh or damaging chemicals will be in my home. That being said, I’m nowhere near perfect.
But it’s quite amazing when you have children how your perspective and level of concern can really deepen. This planet is now a place that my own kids will have to grow up in. How can I personally have an impact on its physical future and teach positive behaviours in my kids? How can I ensure they understand the beauty of our world and the responsibility we all have to make it last?
More immediately, how can I make sure that products I’m using are not only “green” but also safe for my children? Safe and (as a busy mom) effective! Plus, I want to make sure the companies my hard-earned dollars are supporting are making good decisions for their customers and for the greater good of the earth and humanity. That’s a lot to ask of a company, isn’t it? But if I’m going to be a responsible consumer, I expect a great deal of the companies I’m giving my money to.
Enter Seventh Generation.
Now here’s a company and a line of products that meets these criteria. I’ve had the opportunity to try out some of their products recently and this “Earth Mother” (I use the term loosely!) has been pleasantly surprised.
I’ve been particularly happy with the laundry detergent since we’re a family with sensitive skin. All kinds of things can set off reactions in my fair-haired munchkins. The detergent cleaned clothes well (points from mom) and didn’t cause any skin reactions (points from kids), which often happens with other detergents.
I also had a friend test out the diapers (since I no longer have any baby bums in this household) and she was surprised by how well they worked. They were thin and fitted (comfy for babes) and worked just as well as her usual brands.
Are you an Earth Mother (or father or grandparent or sister or uncle…)? Do you care about the products you use in your household? You can join the Seventh Generation movement by signing up at their website and you’ll get access to some coupons and healthy living tips.
GIVEAWAY: One of you lovely readers will also have the chance to win a 100% organic cotton Seventh Gen Eco lunch bag and coupons for FREE products (courtesy of the beautiful folks at Seventh Generation) so you can test them for yourself! All you have to do is comment below and let me know your best tip on how to be more environmentally conscious.
Contest is open to Canadian residents only and ends at 11:59pm on September 16th, 2011.
As Kermit said, it’s not easy being green, but companies like Seventh Generation make it a lot easier! Now let’s hear your green tips!

Well, seeing as though I'm married to Ed Begley Jr.'s twin brother (!!), we do a lot to live green. I don't have a working dryer, so all of my clothes get hung out on the line. I use vinegar and water as a cleanser. It's fantastic on mirrors, and it doesn't leave a chemical residue that can make kids and pets sick. We wash out all of our milk bags and use them as sandwich and freezer bags. We compost and recycle, and we're now down to two small Walmart bags of garbage per week. It's a good week when we're down to one! I work from home, and my hubby rides his bike to work, so we don't contribute to car emissions. And last but certainly not least, we have taught our daughters how to live green, so they will continue the compassion towards the environment into the next generation.
ReplyDeleteMy tip is to walk wherever you can. It is great for the environment and as a bonus it's good for your health too!

I got a rain barrel last year. Everytime I would have my hose/sprinkler turned on it would actually turn my stomach thinking of all the water waste. I am able to water my gardens happily and without enormous guilt. Every drop counts when it comes to our water supplies. Love all the tips here. Keep them coming!
ReplyDeleteWe always exercise Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Simply turning off and unplugging electronics when not in use. We use Recyclable Bags when shopping and grocery. We use Environment Friendly products. We never use plastics containers :)
