Frances England says it's OK to have a mind of our own

I’ve had the opportunity to listen to a lot of children’s music over the years.  I keep wondering when I’m going to get stuck listening to something boring that my kids will hate and I will dread having to review.

But over and over again, I’m pleasantly surprised to learn about a new artist (well, new to me) who puts together a sweet set of songs for little ones that moms and dads can also enjoy listening to.

This time was not an exception.  Frances England created an upbeat collection of songs that are catchy enough to make me clap and snap every time I hear it.  With her indie-folk style she reminds me of artists like The Be Good Tanyas or She & Him.  Definitely great for clapping and shaking and bouncing but not over the top.  Just perfect.

Suvi’s favourite track is number 13, All the Ways, which is a really fun song about the ways she shows “you” she loves you.  We couldn’t help but shimmy and sing along with that one about four times in a row in the van today.  Or laughing at the line in Mind of My Own (title track) that says she thought it was OK to dance in the livingroom in her underwear.  I think my kids want us to do this now but I'm not sure my suburban neighbours could handle it.

Here’s some samples of tracks from the album:

  2. Great songs, love them! My 3-yr-old daughter definitely has a mind of her own. We have some epic battles now, but I know it will stand her in good stead through adolescence and beyond.

  3. She's great. Definitely going to pick her up at the library... well that came out wrong.

Have you heard of Mates of State? If you like her, I think you'd like them. Very She & Himish.

  4. Great music! Lately Nathan is his own little radio station. He sings nursery rhymes and other songs that he's been learning at school. It's funny, because he'll be singing one song and half way through start another one.

Glad to see you back! You've been quite the busy traveler lately (so jealous of all your adventures!)!
