Now although we've been doing the robot to Telephone by Lady Gaga during mealtime prep this week (did I just admit publicly to listening to Lady Gaga?), and we've been doing our best hip hop moves to The Niceness by Buck 65 (and encouraging my boys to be just like Rich Terfry), we've also been giving regular listens to a great new kids CD called Time Out to Rock by Seattle band The Not-Its! Check this album cover! Love.
And let me tell you, if your kids like to play air guitar while they listen to music, they will love this CD.
The Not-Its! are fronted by Sarah Shannon of 90s band Velocity Girl and she and the rest of the band are a powerhouse of fun and rockin' guitars, not to mention that their bass player, Nori Hoeft, is also a super-talented female...talk about your rock 'n' roll girl role models!
There are lots of great tracks on this album: from the rockin' title track, Time Out to Rock (which Max has now asked to be instead of regular time outs. Rockin' timeouts are apparently far more fun), to Green Light Go (which is also a favourite around here because you get to play Red Light, Green Light along with the song... and going really, really slow for yellow is just way too much fun) to the surfer tune First Kid in Outer Space...each track is just a whole lot of fun! My personal favourite is Cheetah the Buffalo about a cheetah who tries to live in the buffalo herd but realizes she's not like the others. It's a catchy tune with a good message.
Alongside the message to rock! (sorry, a bit of a Jack Black moment there...)
Here's a clip from a recent live performance of Green Light, Go!

You really must have this Not-Its! album if you have any mini-rockers of roughly ages 3 to 7 in your household. In fact, I'm going to make sure at least one of you does - I am giving one copy of this new release to a lucky reader.
How to win? Comment and let me know what music your family loves. Tweet for additional entries. You know the drill.
Contest ends midnight EST Tuesday, July 27.
Good luck!
